① World Heritage —— Mozu Furuichi Kofun (Ancient Tombs) Groups

The tomb of Emperor Nintoku of the Mozu Furuichi Kofun group is one of the three major tombs in the world, along with the pyramid of King Kufu in Egypt and the tomb of Qin Shi Huang.

Kofun is a large tomb built in Japan during the 3rd-7th centuries. The soil was piled up high to make a hill, and it was used as a tomb for nobles at that time. "Mozu Furuichi Kofun Group" is a general term for a group of Kofuns built in the south of Osaka from the latter half of the 4th century to the first half of the 6th century. At that time, there were 200 kofuns, but only 89 of them are left today. Among them, the group of ancient burial mounds in Sakai City has been called the "Mozu Tombs", and the group of ancient burial mounds that cross Habikino City and Fujiidera City has been called the "Furuichi Ancient Tombs". In July 2019, "Mozu Furuichi Kofungun" was registered as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. It is the 23rd World Heritage Site in Japan.

It is the largest anterior-posterior burial mound in Japan, and is called the "Mozu Sankofungun" together with the northern Emperor's tombs (Tanadeyama burial mounds) and the southern Emperor's tombs (Ishitsugu burial mounds). Currently, it is under the control of the Imperial Household Agency as the Nintoku Emperor's Mausoleum of the Mozu Mimihara Sanryo Churyo. The front part of the south-facing mound is about 486m long, the rear circle part is about 249m in diameter and 34.8m high, and the front part is about 307m wide and 33.9m high, and has a three-tiered structure. There are dents on the left and right, and three moats surround the outside, but the current outer layer has recently been re-excavated. Inside the burial mound, there are haniwa, and the excavated haniwa depicts a person (female head), a waterfowl, a horse, a deer, and a house.
