Three Selected Autumn Foliage Spots along the Nankai Line

The autumn foliage season has finally arrived! For those who want to take the train and fully enjoy the beauty of autumn leaves, we recommend the spots along the Nankai Line introduced here.

Enmeiji Temple

About a 10-minute ride on the Nankai Bus from Mikanodai Station on the Nankai Koya Line. Enmeiji Temple, selected as one of the “100 Green Selections of Osaka,” is a famous temple for autumn leaves.

Known as one of the best spots for autumn foliage in the Kansai region, the temple grounds become vibrant with the colors of maple, enkianthus, and ginkgo trees during this season, attracting many visitors for autumn leaf viewing. A popular spot is the “Yusho Momiji,” designated as a natural monument of Osaka Prefecture. It is said that Kobo Daishi (Kukai) planted it himself. The sight of the leaves glowing in the late autumn sunset is beautiful, and it will soon be at its best.

Climbing the stairs next to the temple grounds, you will find the lotus pond. The autumn leaves dyed in vivid colors are beautiful, but you can also enjoy the beauty of the autumn scenery from various angles, such as the leaves reflected on the water surface and the leaves gently falling.

Daisen Park

About a 10-minute ride on the Nankai Bus from Sakai-Higashi Station. Adjacent to the World Heritage Site Nintoku-tenno-ryo Kofun, Daisen Park is a symbol of Sakai City, surrounded by greenery and history. The park features various facilities such as Dora Pond, a lawn plaza, a children’s forest, a museum, a tea house, and a Japanese garden. It has been selected as one of the “100 Historical Parks of Japan” and is a place of relaxation for the locals.

The Japanese garden, which uses traditional gardening techniques, was created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the city’s establishment and symbolizes the future of the progressive city of Sakai. The garden, adorned with beautiful ponds, streams, and seasonal flowers, soothes the hearts of visitors. It is also recommended to enjoy matcha and sweets at the tea ceremony room while admiring the scenic views.

Within the park, you can see families and couples leisurely strolling or cycling, friends holding photo sessions with their smartphones to capture the beautiful autumn leaves, and people spending their time as they please. Whether alone, with friends, or with family, you can fully enjoy the changing seasons in this park filled with many attractions.

Ushitakisan Daiitokuji Temple

As one of Osaka’s premier autumn foliage spots, Ushitakisan is highly popular. Nestled in the mountains is the Tendai sect’s mountain temple, Daiitokuji. Revered as a sacred site for Shugendo practices since ancient times, Daiitokuji was a temple where both Shingon and Tendai teachings were studied. It is said that Kobo Daishi (Kukai) trained here and built the Tahoto pagoda. The pagoda, rebuilt in the Muromachi period, is designated as an Important Cultural Property. The temple grounds also feature the “Katsuragi Shugendo Tenth Sutra Mound,” which was recognized as a Japan Heritage site in 2020.

The main attraction is the combination of the Tahoto pagoda and the autumn leaves. The view of the pagoda surrounded by colorful foliage is photogenic from any angle. The best time to visit is from mid to late November.

The scenery is soothing, but the cute Jizo statues also bring comfort. Along the path from the main gate to the pagoda, you’ll find the endearing “Shiawase Jizo” and “Guchikiki Jizo.” Their gentle and soft expressions make you want to quietly put your hands together in prayer.

While the scenery at Daiitokuji is wonderful, the area behind the main hall features numerous impressive waterfalls and rich natural surroundings. There are also hiking trails where you can feel the ancient history.
